We prevaricate a bit more, lingering outside the patisserie as if about to embark on some kind of pastry-based crime. The idea of skipping a day's stage is a struggle to contemplate. Have we got all this way only to cheat ourselves at the first sign of weakness? Isn't this truly the time to dig in and show our mettle? Will we look back at this moment with regret for the rest of our lives as we recount our adventures to our grandchildren over tea and scones in front of a blazing winter fire? On the other hand, though, what's the big deal? We have walked about 400 km and climbed the equivalent of Snowdon most days over the last three weeks, so is it really that terrible to take a day off and skip a few kilometres – which is really all we are talking about here? God, the power of rationalisation; I would make a terrible addict. But still, we do note that Douggie makes several references to people hitching short sections of the route now and again, the tedious road sections, and also taking the odd short cut, so we don't think we are entirely flying in the face of GR10 protocol by skipping a stage. As we loiter suspiciously outside the patisserie we get distracted by the attractive young woman through the window dishing out the croissants and baguettes and our conversation turns to the question of how all patisseries in France are staffed by good-looking women, whereas most bakers back home are normally staffed by the baking branch of the Addams Family. We come to the conclusion that French women are generally more attractive than their English counterparts (although this is partly due to the alluring accent) and so, on a percentage basis, one is more likely to find more attractive women working in a patisserie than in a bakery: so it is probably not the case that patisseries have a a higher percentage of good-looking women working in them compared to other similar French food-based outlets.
